We all strive for expansion and growth. We do our best every day to achieve our goals and dreams to live a better life. However, there is always something that we can improve, something that we can do better.

Surly, there is no better time for us to do a full life assessment than at the end of the year. This is the best time to review the entire past year and set our mindset for the upcoming year. Certainly, there is something special about this period. It brings new energy, inspiration, motivation, and excitement. After all, it is an entirely new year that is opening up to us to write our own story, strive to achieve our dreams, and live our lives to the fullest.

But how do I write a year end review? There is no formula, right or wrong. It is a very personal thing. It is a moment of introspection, go within and be honest to ourselves. Luckily there are templates and guidance that you can use to go through this journey. In this article you will find guidance, suggestion of an end year review template to use, and much more end year review tips. So let’s dive in.

Why You Should Do Year End Reviews?

Understand the importance of doing an end year review and it’s purpose can help you to get motivated to set some time aside and do your life assessment. End year review process is easier but you have to be willing to do it and committed to do it with a purpose. Three main reason are highlighted below.

1. Assess your life

This is an incredible opportunity for understanding where you are in you life? Look back to the past year and ask yourself if you are happy with the results you have got. Did you enjoy your life? Did you have fun? What have you achieved? What worked in the last year and what you can improve? What would you do differently? Only when you have a full picture of your year and life you can change things, do better and grow.

2. Acknowledge your wins

We often don’t stop to acknowledge our wins. Small or bigger, doesn’t matter. They are all wins that are bringing you closer to your goals and dreams. When we acknowledge our wins we are training our mind to be grateful, and expect more of that. Therefore, as per the Laws of Universe, you will attract more of good things in your life. That’s the moment to stop and think about what you achieved in the last year. Certainly, there are so much to be grateful for, even a year we are just finishing (2020 – Global Pandemic).

3. Set your mindset for the next year

A new year is a whole new page to write your own story. However, what do you really want for the next year? When doing a Year End Review you will have the time to think about how you want your life to be in the next 12 months, and then work from there to define what goals to focus on, define an action plan and take actions on a daily basis to achieve it. That’s the secret to grow, expand and achieve your goals and dreams quicker.

Benefits of Doing a Personal End Year Review?

I have been doing a personal end year review for many years by now. I can tell you the benefits are huge, just to name a few:

  • Calm of mind: It is amazing to be able to see how much you are progressing and growing through out the years.
  • Defined Roadmap: Knowing where you are going and what you want to achieve in the next year.
  • Sense of purpose: Feeling that you are living your life to the best you can, with a purpose.
  • Control over you life: Realize you are in control of your live. You are creating your own reality.
  • Motivation: It gives more motivation to go through the next year with full faith that you can achieve more, do more, live better.

How to Do a Personal End Year Review?

I will share with you the way I do my End Year Review, which involves some steps and a full end year review questions that guide me through this life assessment process.

Step 1 – End Year Ritual:

Set aside some time at the end of the year for yourself to go through this exercise. Prepare the atmosphere for it. Make it a ritual. In general, I go to a different place, to relax and get more inspired. It can be a park, beach or maybe your favorite hotel/spa. This year (2020) it’s a bit different so maybe you can just choose a quiet time and place in your own house, grab a cup of tea, relax and have fun while doing your End Year Review. That’s what I’m going to do. If you are into candles, crystal… use them. Use all the resources you have to make yourself feel relaxed and receptive. Once you have your scene set, do a short meditation if you want to, or just be still for a few minutes, then remember the people you really care about or happy moments and get into this state of gratitude. Now you are ready to start your End Year Review.

Step 2 – Reflecting on the good

Through a series of end year review questions, this first part is dedicated to reflect on the past year and write down all the positive things that happened. Reflect on it question for a minute. Then, jot down whatever comes to your mind. Don’t judge it and be kind to yourself.

Step 3 – Assessment by each area of life

In this part you are invited to go even further and reflect on each area of your life (Healthy, Relationship, Finance, Business & Career, Personal Growth). Using a scale rate, it is pretty easy to have a good overview of how well you were doing in each main area of your life. What are the positive things that happened in each area of your life? Assess what you could have done differently, what you can improve, what the next steps/actions are, and what you need to focus on to take that area of your life to the next level. Focus on the positive side and decide what you can improve.

Step 4 – Lessons learned

In this third part of the Review, focus on the lessons learned in this past year, what advice you would give to yourself for next year and what are the main things you want to focus on in the new year. Be very sincere with yourself and do an honest assessment. Then, evaluate your feelings and expectations for the next year and commit yourself to make it the best year of your life.

Step 5 – New Year wishes

In this final part of the Review, our focus is on the New Year. What do you really want to achieve in the next year? What are your dreams? Define your big goal. The one that you want more than anything else. The one that you will do whatever it takes to achieve it. Based on that, make a vision board for next year. It will help you to get more emotionally involved in your goal, and help you manifest it quicker.

The end year review process described above has been working for me for many years with huge benefits. Based on that I created Bloomy End Year Review Template.

I enjoyed reading your post. It made me realized that I haven’t done any year end reviews. I have a journal, I write stuff. And every year ends, I only write my plans and goals for the upcoming year but not a year end review.

To have an Year End Review will actually help you to evaluate yourself, your work, and also will help you plan out how you’re going to reach the goal that you weren’t able to accomplish on that year.

    1. Thank Aparna. We, as human being, have a tendency to focus on the negative, so it is important to celebrate our wins and look forward to a new year with faith and positivity. Happy 2021.

  3. I never thought of doing a year-end review on how 2020 went for me. This is the first year that I’ve actually written where the public can see. Actually, let me rephrase that, I started this year writing. Since losing my job at the beginning of this year, it’s been a totally different mindset for me, honestly. I’m very excited that I started this journey, even if it’s still so new.

Great advice! Thanks for sharing this with us and giving us all this idea.

    1. Hi Katrina, writing is an amazing thing for me too. I also keep a journal and helps me a lot. Actually, I have a post where I talk more about it if you want to check it out (How to use a Bullet Journal to calm your mind). End Year Review is nothing more than a journal where you reflect about your past year and set your goals for the following year. It is a great tool to keep us motivated and looking to the future with hope. You are in the right way and there is no right or wrong here… just put in the paper what comes in your mind. It is from your heart 🙂 Have a lovely 2021.
